THE WORLD
The world is dying. Every major city has become a mere shadow of what they once were. Where there was order, there is now a delicate chaos that threatens to devolve into true anarchy. The world is now just over two years into the CAE: Common Ash Era.
It began slowly and, because of that, no one noticed. The leaves began to dry at an unusual rate, then the trees rotted and petrified. Over the course of several months, ash storms raged as the trees disintegrated. Many thought it was the apocalypse they day the world became dark, that the world was ending by fire, and it was burning from the inside out. The air became thick and noxious, especially within the cities and heavily populated regions.
The ash clouds changed animals and people. Those changes, too, were slow. They became monstrous and feral, some so stricken with some mystery plague that they were barely recognizable. To this day, no one knows if they keep their senses or if everything gets lost in the rotted ash. It's hard to say when so many people who were normal once found themselves changed in some aspects, but still remained themselves outwardly and inwardly. Are they safe? Should they be eliminated before they become worse? Are they beasts or are they still human?
While the ash storms have lessened, the air is still not entirely safe to breathe. Gas masks and scarves are the norm among the scavengers (a more common term to hear instead of the word "survivor.") Many scavengers form their own groups and roam across the country in search of safety, food, weapons, anything as so long as they can have another day of life. Safe zones are generally found in the wilderness and in the islands, where nature has taken over and worked on healing herself. The cities are not so fortunate, as only the underground regions and very tall buildings are considered safer than ground level. Some scavenger groups have formed outposts in the wilderness as safe zones along the ways to the large cities, but they are not marked like cities. Scavenger groups in cities are known to mark off territories by spray painting symbols across a designated area. Some groups are more vicious than others and some groups do form alliances, but territory disputes are not uncommon.
They say it started with the trees across the world dying, but plants are starting to grow again in unusual places. Clean water can be scarce, but it can be found. Gasoline, to an extent, can be very difficult to find in usual places. Scavengers are known to siphon gasoline out of useless cars and use them in their own customized cars, armored and retrofitted to push through beast hordes and overgrown highways. Some have been more ingenious and scavenged solar panels to energize their vehicles.
The weather of the world is erratic. Some days it will be a torrential storm, other days it will be a blaze of sunlight and no wind. The worst days are when the ash storms push through. Most of the time, they can be predicted up to three days before the full storm hits.
Some scavengers have taken to adopting strange animals for pets, since the zoos have become overrun. Ashen animals are generally easy to see by the way their coats are splotched grey, but they are not always feral or dangerous. Some animals have been known to become more docile as the ash can weaken them.
KNOWN SAFE ZONES
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
The largest unmarked safe zone known and arguably the most successful. Many scavengers choose to settle here and start their own trade posts and lodges for cross-country travelers. Some consider Yellowstone a safe haven for the "ashens" (humans with strange changes due to the ash).
ELLIS ISLAND
Just far enough to be considered a safe zone, Ellis Island is where many scavengers go to gather information on travel, weather conditions and territory disputes. The ferry system functions on occasion, but rowboats are preferred to save gasoline. The Statue of Liberty is reserved for the severely injured and sick scavengers.

ALCATRAZ
Another island, though significantly smaller than Ellis Island. Because of its facilities, many known ashens have been put in lockdown and kept away from the general populace. Defining an ashen criminal results in plenty of shall we say physical debate, making Alcatraz one of the most dangerous safe zones.
SAN FRANCISCO : BUILDINGS AND TERRITORIES
This mainland safe zone has the advantage of being near the sea and being a port, yet the sea also makes the city more vulnerable to ashens. The natural weather conditions of San Francisco allow the scavengers living in the city to breathe a little more openly, but the sea is known to have ash buildups.
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE : Scavenger groups have taken to occupying the bridge and turning it into a toll zone to collect goods, sometimes by force and through violence.
